- The History of Document Scanning
-
Early Image scanner devices / document scanning operated on telephotography technique with a rotating drum component at a speed of 60 or 120 rotations per minute (more recently 240rpm). It worked by sending a linea analog AM signal through standard telephone voice lines to receptors which synchronously print the proportional intensity on special paper. This was also the method of printing press from the early 1920’s in the 1990’s.
In 1921 Western Union transmitted it’s first halftone photograph, followed by AT &T in 1924. In 1935 the Associated Press began its wire service and held the trademark on the term ‘AP Wirephoto’ between 1963 and 2004. The first AP Wirephoto depicted the crash of a plane in the Adirondack Mountains in New York.
In 1957 the first internally programmable computer was manufactured capable of scanning digital images. The first image scanned was that of the three month old son of Russell Kirsch who led his team to the development of the modern scanner at the National Bureau of Standards in the United States of America. The image was 5cm square in size and 176 pixels in terms of resolution. This breakthrough invention made CAT scans, barcodes, satellite imaging and desktop publishing possible. From this moment on turning hard copies of paper documents and films into digital images would revolutionalise the modern world and change the way we view and share images forever.
The very necessity for image / document scanning was largely due to the perishable nature of film and paper, Image scanners were seen to be useful gadgets prior to the invention of digital cameras and in the work place the scanner has very much preceded the role of fax input devices. Sophisticated intelligent scanning of documents not only saves companies millions of pounds throughout the world but has now become an integral part of most business practices.

- Document Scanning - A Bluffers Guide
-
Document scanning or document imaging is simply the process of scanning paper documents, turning them into digital images and storing them. A scanner is a device that optically scans text, whether it be printed or handwritten, or a drawing or photograph and digitizes it.
Here are a few of different types of scanners that are required for different reasons:
Desktop or Flatbed scanner: often used in small businesses and are nowadays are very affordable. However, they do not offer the same scanning quality as a high end scanner.Handheld Scanner: typically you may have seen these in shops and used to scan bar codes. These are also the types of scanners that are used by interactive video games
Mechanically driven scanners: used for large format and move the document through the scanner
The main reasons to scan a document are to either preserve it from perishing, to share the document with other readers or to save space.
Storetec use exclusively Kodak scanners for standard A4/A3 documents. These scanners, known as production scanners, can scan both sides of a sheet of A4 simultaneously at up to 140 pages per minute.Storetec also use wide format scanners from Oce and Colortrac these machines utilise the latest LED scanning technology and effectively stitch together the images.

A few years ago, fire at an Iron Mountain facility in London, destroyed the 126,000square foot structure which was home to many of their London based client files and records.
The day before a fire at Iron Mountains facility in Ottawa damaged about 3% of their files and records – mainly due to water damage from the sprinkler system that contained the fire.
The fires prompted Rent-a Centre Inc, a Texan based company to set up plans to implement Electronic Archive Systems.
Norton Rose, a London based Law Firm who lost 7,000 files in the London fire were already in the process of setting up electronic archiving systems at the time the files were destroyed.
Storetec provide a document scanning service that allow paper records to be digitised so they are no longer perishable, combustible and are easy to back up and retrieve. By scanning documents and destroying the originals companies can use space previously occupied by archives thus saving money.
