Document Management Jargon – What is OCR, ICR and OMR?

February 11, 2022

At Storetec we often get asked to clarify what OCR, IMR, and OMR stand for.

  • Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is the conversion of typed, handwritten or printed text into machine-encoded text.
  • Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) is a handwriting recognition system that allows fonts and different styles of writing to be learned.
  • Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) is the process of capturing human-marked data from document forms, e.g., surveys.

Storetec utilises these industry-leading technologies for data extraction, to capture key data from your documents as required. Data can be captured from predetermined fields, such as name; date; invoice number etc. Captured data can then be transferred back to you via your preferred method, or Storetec can feed this data directly into your internal systems, such as Sage; Oracle; or Pegasus.

OCR can also be applied to PDFs during the indexing process to make the PDF fully text-searchable, so clients can search for keywords and locate the page required within the PDF. OCR can also be utilised during content searches in FreeDocs to locate the required documents promptly and efficiently.
